about

This is an album of an imagined concert repertoire for the Hohner Guitaret, an electric lamellophone created by Hans Zacharias in the 1960s as a way of combining amplification with simplicity for the home musician. It is layer out in a manner to permit easy I-IV-V progressions with optional 7ths, but paradoxically this instrument which was designed with rhythmic accompaniment in mind - it was originally called the Rytmo - permits the kind of delicate arpeggiation that is typical of all kalimbas.

What started out as a thought experiment - if I could play the standard prelude arpeggiated pieces in the classical guitar/piano repertoire - has blossomed into a portfolio of more than 10 hours worth, of which these four albums are a selection.

Some of the music necessitated multi-tracking and octave shifting using a Digitech WhammyDT. All of the music is played through a set of virtual pedals on a Zoom multistomp BT with compression, detuning, flanging, chorus and reverb. This is to provide coloration and pad out the swiftly decaying sound of the tines being plucked (and the F line hum which periodically intruded on the sound). But I also love the resulting sound - especially the splashes of unintended artefact sound that sounds like birdsong.

The recordings are all set against field recordings made by the Freesound user Klankbeeld made in Haanwijk in North Brabant in the Netherlands. This first album is based on a recording made there in February, which I use with utter gratitude. The recordings were sourced by Cameron Byrd for me, when I asked him to find 4 really long recordings in one place at different times of year.

"Small mixed forest with pines and oaks near farmland in Holland winter morning 10.30 AM. It feels could but birds sing there 'coming spring' song. Woodpeckers, tits, crows and other common birds around. The low-level hum you hear is from the A2 highway."

about

Ivodne Galatea Nedlands, Australia

Principally playing original compositions of an ambient nature on the Hohner Guitaret as well as other thumb pianos/finger harps/lamellophones.
Interested in orchestration using field recordings, per the great John Cage's suggestions (1937).
The pieces are all pataphysical book reviews. They consist of musical essays on books of the same title that haven't been written, but should have.
