about

This is an EP (my first) to make available a recording I made of an arrangement of a piece that I wrote many years ago. I found it, liked it and shared it. People asked me to make it available, so here it is.

It's an arrangement I made of a duet I wrote but never sent to an English harmonium and piano duo quite some time ago. I also arranged it for violin and piano with an alternative second movement (itself an arrangement of a song I couldn't get performance clearance on the lyrics for) that was played once and neglected. It's that alternative arrangement I re-arranged, as the extended harmonium notes played tremolando were a bit manic.

So I got a "grace note" pedal made for me by Bill Wardlow of Molten Voltage to enable me to both extend the range of my Guitaret and enable me to do trills and shakes on it. The ornaments weren't always useful as the built-in reverb of the second set of reeds also shifted which as an effect was nice, but not necessarily in every context.

But when I was playing around with it I found myself playing the opening to this piece using the grace note as a detune mechanism up and down, and thought that an arrangement of the piece for Guitaret and Pianet would have a wonderful Canterbury-ish sound to it, which is something I would in another life aspire to.

This recording (converted from an MP3) is all that is left as I had a catastrophic drive failure and had been ignoring TimeCapsule for the best part of a month as I needed more room. I lost heart in the project after that, but my cheer-squad Bruce said it was worth releasing as an EP. He also said:
Misty morning in memory
The bird stands taut, concentrating
While hammer, saw and magpie
Harp moss-green across the stage

So (as I said) here it is.

The Harmonium and Piano (actually American Organ and Upright Piano) original is here: ivodnegalatea.bandcamp.com/track/lost-empires

If anyone wants the score for their Pianet and Guitaret duet, please ask and I will polish it up.

about

Ivodne Galatea Nedlands, Australia

Principally playing original compositions of an ambient nature on the Hohner Guitaret as well as other thumb pianos/finger harps/lamellophones.
Interested in orchestration using field recordings, per the great John Cage's suggestions (1937).
The pieces are all pataphysical book reviews. They consist of musical essays on books of the same title that haven't been written, but should have.
