about

This track features an extended rendition of Nyamaropa, considered by many to be a foundational tune for many others in the mbira repertory. Berliner has said that it was the first ever piece written for the mbira dza vadzimu. With this in mind, the rendition visits various other of the tonic pieces with various interpretations, including Chipembere, Karige Mombe and has reprises of Mahororo and Nhemamusasa.

Nyamaropa is the great piece of the Mbira cycle: some say the original piece of cycle. From it many of the other pieces were derived, so it explores a lot of the ramifications of the piece melodically in the various interpretations by the grand players of mbira. Additionally this means that not only is the rendition the longest in this series of recordings (nearly half an hour continuous playing) it also features hints of other pieces including Nhemamusasa and Chipembere.

The piece has a setting inspired by the overall slightly melancholy nature of the second half of the mbira cycle - I have put it in a dusk setting at at the same time (inspired by a childhood country experience of a total eclipse) I have an emergent dawn chorus at the same time as a dusk chorus throughout.

about

Ivodne Galatea Nedlands, Australia

Principally playing original compositions of an ambient nature on the Hohner Guitaret as well as other thumb pianos/finger harps/lamellophones.
Interested in orchestration using field recordings, per the great John Cage's suggestions (1937).
The pieces are all pataphysical book reviews. They consist of musical essays on books of the same title that haven't been written, but should have.
