about
I had to go back to my recordings to get material to make up enough for a second CD when I split up a record to put it into CreateSpace. So I went back to an earlier experiment with Guitaret/Pianet where I recorded Matepe music that had been collected and transcribed by Andrew Tracey in the 60s, but was only really present in musicology.
I hadn't put it on the Album before because I was experimenting with the sound/feel of music on the wind, where music is nearby and is half heard, but the wind is in effect acting like and enormous tremolo mechanism.
People I played it to didn't get it, and because I loved it, I just let it drop. So now here it is again, and I still love it.
This is a medley of more matepe pieces collected by Andrew Tracey, played on the Guitaret and Pianet.
The pieces are Muchenjedza Mutonga, Marume Ashuro Mambo, Kanotamba Mubani, Siti, musikana akanaka, Rega Kurakana Bza Dzuro and Kari muchipfuwa.
They are played through a morphing ambience on an Alessis Wedge.
There is an obbligato Arturia CS-80V, as well as an obbligato Foghorn (from shepardr) and many, many birds. The consistent percussion is the sound of snowflakes on an umbrella from Klankbeeld.
The ambience is provided in part by the dawn chorus recorded at Largs by a friend.
