about

A duet for upright piano and American organ: a sonata in cyclical form, in acknowledgement of the undisputed masterpiece of the medium.

The sonata is based on an irregular five note pattern, which occurred to me once playing an American organ in a junk shop, and which clung to me for days after. I went back and bought the organ, then finished the piece as a duet.

i andantino misterioso, ii adagio alla campo, iii marcia moderato, iv andantino a tempo

The American Organ is the poor relation of the Orgue expressif in much the way that the upright piano is that of the grand. Its negative pressure bellows mechanism makes it easier to play evenly, but at the cost of expression. But like the upright piano, it has a unique sound, which deserves attention. Uprights and American organs are also much more forgiving than their rich relations - both have to be pretty run down before they are unplayable. So a duet for them both has much to offer.

Harmoniums and American organs are the synths of their day - using a combination of reeds of different sorts to make completely different sounds. I managed to use nearly all of the knobs on the Estey I had:
1. Organ (Diapason, Melodia) plus dolce 2. Flute (Viola) 3 Oboe (Hautboy)
4. Gamba (Seraphone) 5. Voix Celeste 6. Aeolian 7. Sub-bass (Cremona)

Ivodne Galatea Nedlands, Australia

Principally playing original compositions of an ambient nature on the Hohner Guitaret as well as other thumb pianos/finger harps/lamellophones.
Interested in orchestration using field recordings, per the great John Cage's suggestions (1937).
The pieces are all pataphysical book reviews. They consist of musical essays on books of the same title that haven't been written, but should have.
