Reeds in the Wind

from The Poetics of Space by Ivodne Galatea

about

This is a medley of African tunes, containing pieces played on the Hohner Pianet, a keyboard lamellophone.

The pieces are Bayawabaya, Chikunda 1 & 2, Aroiya Mwana, Chakwi and Hondo Mahondo. They are matepe and karimba pieces transcribed by Andrew Tracey. Full details are in the download booklets.

Since Mbira music has a tradition of Kutsinhira and Kushaura voicings, I have played it as a duet. Since I wanted it to be spontaneous, I used the Boomerang III Looper (it has an amazing 17 minutes on mono at 24Khz). The two sounds are played live by my Roland SP-404sx. So this is as live a recording I can make! The pianet is put through a chorus and a Leslie-sh pedal. The output was grabbed directly to a Sony PCM-M10 recorder.

When rehearsing and then recording this, I kept on thinking of how it would be a good soundtrack for my old friend MG flying in his dragonfly over the farmlands on a gently sunlit day.

about

Ivodne Galatea Nedlands, Australia

Principally playing original compositions of an ambient nature on the Hohner Guitaret as well as other thumb pianos/finger harps/lamellophones.
Interested in orchestration using field recordings, per the great John Cage's suggestions (1937).
The pieces are all pataphysical book reviews. They consist of musical essays on books of the same title that haven't been written, but should have.
